What FutureHouse does
FutureHouse is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research lab building “AI scientist” systems to automate and accelerate scientific discovery, with an emphasis on biology and related complex sciences. The organization’s core approach is to pair researchers with specialized AI agents and to validate AI systems on research workflows (from literature synthesis through chemistry planning and data-driven discovery), with an aim of making advanced scientific assistance widely usable via web and API access.

As of 2025, FutureHouse’s main public-facing product line is the FutureHouse Platform, which provides multiple task-specialized agents—Crow for general literature Q&A, Falcon for deep literature reviews, Owl for precedent detection (“Has anyone done X before?”), and Phoenix (experimental) for chemistry-experiment planning workflows via tools. FutureHouse positions these agents as parts of a broader system intended to reduce the literature and experimentation bottlenecks that limit scientific throughput. In addition to deploying agents, FutureHouse runs initiatives that put AI-assisted workflows into the hands of early-career scientists. Its flagship program is the AI-for-Science Independent Postdoctoral Fellowship, which pairs early-career researchers with advanced AI tools and academic co-advisors at leading research institutions. Operationally, FutureHouse has also described the progression of its work toward end-to-end “AI Scientist” loops. It highlights Robin as a unified multi-agent system that integrates hypothesis generation, experimental strategy, and data analysis in a continuous workflow. Separately, FutureHouse has released domain-focused model work such as ether0, described as a chemistry-trained reasoning model, and it has published research artifacts and announcements around its literature-focused agents (e.g., PaperQA2). In terms of strategic posture, FutureHouse’s public materials describe a split between nonprofit foundational work and a for-profit commercialization path: FutureHouse launched Edison Scientific as an independent commercial spinout to further develop and deploy AI tools for commercial applications, while FutureHouse continues to focus on nonprofit fundamental research.
