What Google DeepMind does
Google DeepMind is Alphabet’s AI research and product lab, formed by combining DeepMind and Google Brain into a single organization under the “Google DeepMind” name. DeepMind’s stated mission is to build AI responsibly to benefit humanity, and its work spans frontier model research (including world models and multimodal systems), scientific applications (e.g., biology and weather), and applied capabilities that feed into Google products.

The lab publishes research and product updates under deepmind.google and also through Google’s broader product/research channels. In practice, DeepMind’s positioning is “AI engine room” for the broader Alphabet stack: it develops and evaluates frontier models and techniques, then works with Google product teams so the outputs show up in developer platforms and consumer experiences such as the Gemini app and device features like transcription. As of late August 2026, DeepMind’s operating structure is in a leadership transition, with Demis Hassabis taking a strategic chair/scientist role and Koray Kavukcuoglu stepping up to run day-to-day operations as SVP of Google DeepMind.
