The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation (PJMF) is a U.S.-based philanthropic foundation that “catalyzes the transformative potential of technology” in service of public benefit, with an emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and technology governance for shared human outcomes.
PJMF frames its work around connecting academia, practitioners, and civil society, and it describes its approach as both grantmaking and convening/collaboration with other philanthropies and public-interest partners. Across its “AI for public purpose” portfolio, PJMF funds work spanning digital health, climate and environmental challenges, information technology and data stewardship, and policy/research efforts aimed at safer, more accountable AI systems. In addition to funding, PJMF also develops technology products for the philanthropic and journalism ecosystems, including AI-enabled tools designed to streamline due diligence or publishing workflows.

The foundation announced $75.8 million in charitable spend across 149 grants supporting organizations advancing AI for public purpose across 13 countries, covering areas such as climate resilience, human rights, media/journalism, crisis response, digital literacy, and health equity.
