The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) is a San Francisco–based AI safety research and field-building nonprofit focused on reducing societal-scale risks from advanced artificial intelligence through technical safety research, community and infrastructure building, and policy-oriented advocacy. CAIS frames AI safety as neglected relative to how quickly AI capabilities are developing, and it organizes its work around three pillars: research (including conceptual and technical AI safety work), field-building (including fellowships, competitions/workshops, education, and providing research infrastructure), and advocacy (advising policymakers, industry leaders, and other labs to incorporate AI safety research into real-world decision-making).
