The CSIS Wadhwani AI Center is a research and policy program within the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). It focuses on the governance, geopolitics, and national security implications of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies, with an emphasis on how AI-related decisions affect U.S. leadership, economic competitiveness, and global policy alignment.
Since its 2023 establishment, the Center has positioned itself as a source of policy-relevant analysis for U.S. government officials and international allies, including through testimony, private briefings, and published research. Operationally, the Center is organized around three major research themes: (1) AI governance and regulation, (2) geopolitics of advanced technology (including issues tied to semiconductor export controls and economic security), and (3) AI, autonomy, and national security—particularly how the U.S. Department of Defense and the intelligence community can accelerate AI adoption in a responsible way. The Center also maintains an outreach and communications footprint that includes the AI Policy Podcast (hosted by the Center’s Director, Aalok Mehta) and a monthly newsletter, both designed to translate fast-moving AI policy and security developments for policymakers and the broader policy community.
