The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the U.S. Department of Defense’s R&D organization responsible for funding and overseeing high-risk research and development intended to produce breakthrough technology and “technological surprise” for national security.
DARPA’s work is organized around multiple technical “offices,” with each office executing time-bounded programs that range from foundational science to advanced technology development and transition planning. DARPA differentiates itself from traditional defense R&D by emphasizing early investment in ideas that may not be feasible on normal timelines and by using structured transition pathways to move promising results from research performers toward prototype demonstrations and operational adoption. In addition to internal technical offices, DARPA maintains a Commercial Strategy function designed to accelerate adoption and commercialization of DARPA-funded innovations when appropriate. Strategically, DARPA’s current posture is centered on accelerating disruptive capabilities across physical and information domains.
