ARPA-H (the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health) is a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) agency created to fund and accelerate high-impact biomedical and health R&D that is difficult to accomplish through traditional research or commercial activity.
ARPA-H’s approach emphasizes launching time-bound, milestone-driven research programs; using a “program manager” model; and building scalable platforms and capabilities (not just individual grants) intended to move innovations toward real-world health outcomes. ARPA-H’s work is organized into mission offices that manage distinct focus areas and develop research programs through solicitations (e.g., Innovative Solutions Openings) and other funding mechanisms. Across its portfolio, ARPA-H emphasizes interoperability, translational readiness, and acceleration of evidence generation—ranging from manufacturing and delivery pipelines (e.g., distributed biomanufacturing) to faster diagnostics and AI-enabled research ecosystems.
