Mila (Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute) is a Montreal-based, non-profit academic institute focused on machine learning research, talent training, and technology transfer. It positions itself as a “global pole for scientific advances” intended to accelerate innovation in AI for the benefit of all, emphasizing open science and knowledge transfer between academia and industry.
Mila’s research agenda spans areas such as health, environment and climate change, and AI ethics, while its applied and industry-facing activities are organized around translating research into practical solutions and supporting organizations adopting AI. Mila also runs structured training and venture-building pathways through programs such as AI4Good Lab (a women and gender-diverse ML bootcamp) and Mila Ventures (including the Venture Scientist Bootcamp and related venture-building efforts). Strategically, Mila operates within Canada’s “Pan-Canadian AI Strategy” as part of a broader network of national AI institutes, and it continues to deepen relationships with both AI industry labs (e.g., partnerships) and sector organizations (e.g., applied collaborations in healthcare, culture, and other domains).
