The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) is the graduate public health school of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1916 as the world’s first independent degree-granting school of public health, it has a long-running institutional mission to advance public health through research and education and to translate evidence into public health practice and policy.
Strategically, BSPH is organized around an education-and-research ecosystem spanning ten academic departments and multiple professional and advanced doctoral degree programs (including MPH and DrPH). The School also runs a research infrastructure through its Office of Research and emphasizes research activity globally (including internationally reviewed research activity approvals through its IRB). A notable institutional differentiator is BSPH’s persistent focus on health equity and population-level outcomes, coupled with institutional mechanisms for training and policy-relevant work. For example, BSPH highlights structured fellowship and scholarship programs and schoolwide strategic priorities, including education-focused initiatives and science/translation efforts supported through philanthropic programs such as the Bloomberg American Health Initiative. As of September 22, 2026, BSPH is led by Dean Keshia Pollack Porter (12th dean, in office since August 1, 2025), and the School continues to appoint department chairs and program leadership via searches and leadership transitions reported on the BSPH news site.
