The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the U.S. federal public health agency responsible for protecting health and safety through evidence-based guidance, disease surveillance, laboratory science, and public health research and emergency response. CDC reports that it is one of the major operating components of the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, with an agency-wide mission to prevent, detect, and respond to health threats and to protect Americans’ health through science, data, and partnerships. CDC’s modern role combines ongoing surveillance and prevention programs with rapid operational readiness for emerging outbreaks and other public health emergencies. CDC’s institutional differentiation comes from (1) national-scale epidemiology and laboratory capacity tied to surveillance networks, (2) trusted publication and dissemination channels (including MMWR and CDC WONDER) used by public health practitioners and researchers, and (3) a standing readiness-and-response posture that enables the agency to activate emergency operations and coordinate with federal, state, tribal, local, and territorial partners during high-consequence events. CDC also describes an ongoing strategy to modernize data infrastructure for real-time threat detection and to empower state, tribal, local, and territorial partners through guidance, data systems, and workforce support.
