The Brookings Center for Technology Innovation (CTI) is a Brookings Institution research center focused on how technology innovation intersects with law, economics, society, and governance—particularly in areas such as digital infrastructure, mobile and connected technologies, privacy and cybersecurity, digital media, technology transfer, R&D policy, “responsible innovation,” and digital medicine. CTI’s stated mission is to deliver research that affects public debate and policymaking in U.S. and global technology innovation, including identifying developments and trends, developing and disseminating best practices, and briefing policymakers on actions needed to improve innovation.
CTI is home to TechTank, a Brookings blog and accompanying podcast, and it also houses the Brookings AI Equity Lab, an interdisciplinary project aimed at advancing inclusive, ethical, non-discriminatory, and democratized AI models and systems. The AI Equity Lab is led by CTI’s director, Nicol Turner Lee, and is described as focusing on AI’s socio-technical design and deployment impacts across issue areas including health care, journalism, education, criminal justice, and financial services, with attention to equity and harms tied to model design and autonomous decisions.
