The Center for Humane Technology (CHT) is a San Francisco-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to “realign” consequential technologies—especially social media and AI—so they better serve humanity’s best interests. CHT’s core framing is that many harms arise from incentives embedded in product design and deployment (e.g., attention-harvesting and other persuasive-system patterns), and that sustainable change requires shifting those incentives through a combination of public explanation, policy work, and interventions targeted at how technologies are built and governed.
Institutionally, CHT operates at the intersection of (1) public messaging and culture-shaping media (notably its podcast), (2) policy and legislative design (including “design code” style approaches for safer product behavior), and (3) technical/programmatic efforts aimed at measurement and evaluation of downstream human impacts (e.g., its “Humane Evals” initiative discussed through podcast content).
