Advocacy organization · Policy · Zeist, The Netherlands (PauseAI Global / Stichting PauseAI address listed on its legal information page) · Est. 2023
PauseAI is an international, volunteer-driven advocacy movement coordinated by a global nonprofit entity (“PauseAI Global”, a Dutch Stichting) that campaigns for a temporary pause on the training of the most powerful frontier AI systems until risks can be managed and governance is in place. Its core policy articulation is an international “pause treaty” approach (including an International AI Safety Agency concept) designed to be enforceable and to avoid unilateral competitive disadvantages.
Strategically, PauseAI operates through a federation of local/national chapters, coordinated by an Executive Team (CEO, Organizing Director, and Communications Director) that allocates resources, sets federation-wide strategy, and supports chapters with campaign execution and communications. In parallel to policy proposals and public education, it runs high-visibility public demonstrations (e.g., protests targeting AI summit moments and major AI labs), and it funds bounded volunteer projects through “MicroGrants.”
