Survival and Flourishing Fund (SFF) is a “virtual fund” that organizes and evaluates grant applications so donors can delegate philanthropic decisions—especially on long-term global challenges and the survival and flourishing of sentient life—without running a fully conventional grants office. SFF hosts its own application and recommendation workflow and publishes information about ongoing grant rounds, including deadlines and estimated budgets, as well as its public history of recommended/distributed grants.
SFF describes its core operating method as the “S-Process”: a recurring algorithm + meeting procedure that produces grant recommendations, and an additional “Speculation Grants” mechanism that is retroactively funded based on S-Process recommendations. The organization also uses “Matching Pledges,” where funders commit to match outside donations to certain recommended recipients at a specified rate (up to the pledged amount). Operationally, SFF maintains a donor-advised fund (DAF) at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation under the same name, and it says it also occasionally processes grant recommendations through other DAFs. For initiative grants, SFF describes an “Initiative Committee” that can originate grants without requiring applications. In practice, SFF’s grantmaking infrastructure is supported by Survival and Flourishing Corp (SFC), a Public Benefit Corporation that runs supporting software and operational work behind the S-Process tooling and grant evaluation processes.
