AI Safety Camp (AISC) is a field-building nonprofit initiative that helps AI-safety-minded people team up on concrete research and other safety-relevant projects. AISC’s core mechanism is a structured project “camp”/incubator format: participants form teams around pre-selected projects, collaborate for a multi-month window, and produce tangible outputs (e.g., research writeups, proposals, or other concrete artifacts) rather than only engaging in discussion.
The program is designed to (1) lower the barrier to starting serious work in AI safety by turning “interest” into a guided, time-bounded collaboration, while (2) preserving enough flexibility for diverse project types and epistemic approaches. Strategically, AISC positions itself as a talent-pipeline and collaboration engine: it selects and supports research leads who propose projects, then has those leads recruit small teams. This structure aims to make expert time more resource-efficient than centralized mentoring, and to create a durable network of project relationships that can continue beyond the initial program window. Programmatically, AISC also runs additional formats such as research incubators and publishes ongoing research outputs for each camp edition, serving as an archive and portfolio of what participants ship.
