The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is an independent, nonpartisan science and technology policy research and advocacy organization founded in November 1945 (as the Federation of Atomic Scientists) by scientists and engineers who worked on the Manhattan Project and related wartime sites. Over time, it broadened from nuclear-focused work into a wider policy portfolio spanning global risk, government capacity, emerging technology and competitiveness, climate/energy, and state-and-local innovation—pursuing evidence-based analysis and advocacy intended to help ensure scientific and technical expertise has a “seat at the policymaking table.”
FAS positions its work as bridging rigorous technical understanding with policy design and implementation, including initiatives that support government use of scientific evidence and efforts to strengthen public-interest governance across advanced technology domains.
FAS released the State and Local Heat Policy Agenda and stated that nearly 150 organizations and government officials endorsed it, with the effort made public at HeatAgenda.US.
