The NIST Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) is a U.S. government center housed within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), within the Department of Commerce. CAISI’s stated mission is to act as industry’s primary point of contact within the U.S. government to facilitate testing and collaborative research focused on harnessing and securing commercial AI systems, including work on measurement science, voluntary standards, and security evaluations.
CAISI describes its program approach as combining (1) guideline and best-practices development with NIST organizations to measure and improve security, (2) voluntary agreements with private-sector AI developers/evaluators, and (3) unclassified evaluations of AI capabilities that CAISI says may pose risks to national security—prioritizing risks such as cybersecurity, biosecurity, and chemical weapons. CAISI also positions itself to lead evaluations and assessments regarding U.S. vs. adversary capabilities, adoption of foreign AI systems, international AI competition, and potential security vulnerabilities and malign foreign influence.
