Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory created in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project and managed by UT-Battelle, LLC.
ORNL’s mission is to deliver scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs needed to realize solutions in energy and national security while providing economic benefit to the nation. It operates across core scientific and technical areas including materials, neutron science, nuclear science, high-performance computing, isotopes, biology and environmental science, energy technologies, and national security, with an emphasis on connecting discovery science to deployment and national impact through partnerships, user facilities, and large-scale research infrastructure. Strategically, ORNL is positioning its computing and data capabilities around DOE initiatives such as Genesis Mission, while continuing to serve as a key user-facility operator in DOE computing through the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), which operates Frontier and other major systems. In 2026, ORNL’s public news releases highlight new national partnership models (such as public-private consortium efforts), integration of AI/data workflows with experimental or pilot-scale capabilities, and continued expansion of quantum and hybrid quantum–HPC research infrastructure.
