The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is a U.S. executive department focused on “transformative science and technology solutions” to address the country’s energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges, with the mission “to ensure America’s security and prosperity.” The department’s work spans (1) science-led basic and applied research, (2) energy technology and infrastructure programs, and (3) nuclear security and nonproliferation responsibilities carried out through its semi-autonomous National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
DOE’s institutional role is both research-funding and in-house R&D execution: it manages a system of national laboratories and user facilities and sponsors major scientific programs through its Office of Science and other program offices, while also funding and executing technology development and demonstration efforts across energy sectors. A key technical differentiation is the department’s combination of frontier research capabilities (including Office of Science programs and national-laboratory infrastructure) with mission-driven deployment pathways (for energy technologies and grid modernization) and nuclear-science/engineering execution (stockpile stewardship, nonproliferation, and naval nuclear propulsion) through NNSA.
