The European AI Office (often referred to as the EU AI Office) is an office established within the European Commission to help implement and enforce the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, with a particular focus on general-purpose AI (GPAI) models. Its mandate combines (1) regulatory and enforcement support—developing tools and methodologies for evaluating GPAI capabilities and supporting investigations, guidance, and compliance work—and (2) innovation and international engagement activities aimed at accelerating the development and adoption of trustworthy AI in Europe.
Institutionally, the AI Office is designed to coordinate and support EU-wide implementation rather than replace national authorities. It is part of the Commission’s administrative structure in DG CONNECT, and it works through cooperation mechanisms that include EU advisory bodies supported by the AI Office (such as the European Artificial Intelligence Board) and other expert formats.
