The European Commission is the executive branch of the European Union. It shapes EU strategy, proposes new EU laws and policies, monitors their implementation, and manages the EU budget, alongside a significant role in supporting international development and delivering aid.
In practice, the Commission drives much of the day-to-day operation of EU governance: it proposes legislation, implements decisions, ensures the treaties are upheld, and acts as the “guardian of the treaties” by monitoring how EU countries apply EU law and launching enforcement/infringement actions when needed.
